1月29日 make it soThe moment that's yours right now is the link between intention and reality. You know what it is that you want to accomplish, and today is when you can actually make it so.
You might well wish that you had done it sooner. But all the wishing in the world will not change what is in the past. You might think you can put it off until later. But the only time that's currently available to you is the moment that you're in.
Now is when you can actually make a difference. Now is when you can act to make it so.
Now is a golden moment, filled to the brim with valuable possibilities and rich opportunities. Yet all the wealth in this moment, in this day, will be lost forever if you fail to act.
Seize this moment that you're in, and fill it with purposeful, powerful action. See life in the best light you can imagine, then take this day and make it so.

1月25日 vertical and horizontal asymptotes
ah the joys of high school pre-calculus math...
(if you are new to my blog- one of the hats I wear is as a teaching assistant at a suburban Winnipeg high school)
It’s exam time.
Many are reviewing...
Some are panicking...
Some are scrambling to try desperately to hand in assignments at the last minute. Work that they have avoided and now, can no longer avoid if they do not want to have to repeat courses.
The pressure is on... The staff feel it, the students feel it.
Some are feeling so overwhelmed, they have just given up...
The thing about defeat is that in the short term, it is easy. It excuses you of further obligations for now. It relieves the burden of having to put in any more effort. It’s the easy way out.
Some look for excuses to fail.
If you keep looking for reasons for something to fail, eventually you may likely to be successful in your quest to fail.
Anyone can justify anything to himself or herself if they want bad enough...
This may be a good time to think about what may be motivating you to be doing whatever you are doing.
Ultimately, anything of value takes effort...
It takes motivation, vision, persistence and patience.
If you want it bad enough, you can find a way.
Sometimes we need a little outside help... Here at school, the teachers are willing to assist before or after class. There is a resource area where students can come to get help. I can be of some help in many situations, but in some cases the students can achieve better results by seeking help with more qualified people. You can't force help down someone's throat, though.
Sometimes you can't make it on your own... That’s ok. Resources are all around. Alternatives, the opportunities for success are available to who ever chooses to seek them out.
The successful students overcome their obstacles. They contend with distractions. They hang in there even when they may be feeling lost. They seek extra help in their weakest areas They learn to cope with the pressure. They may feel overwhelmed, but they find a way...
Sometimes it's just bad timing... Too many challenges conspire to interfere with success. So- perhaps the thing that is being trying to be accomplished may seem temporarily out of reach. It’s not a must give up- put it aside for now and come back to it. Some students find success a little later in their lives- when the conditions for achievement are more favourable. It doesn't mean giving up on dreams, but perhaps spending a little more time preparing to achieve them later. Sometimes students have to first groom other skills to set the stage for their success...
In a way, it's easy for me to talk about these things. I am strong, healthy, focussed and fairly together... I have experience and maturity to give me confidence.
Some of these students have a lot on their plates... Abuse, pressures, changes, their unknown future, insecurities, health issues... Currently, I am without many challenges and pressures. One advantage this gives me is strength; another may be a more balanced perspective- one of vision, patience and the persistence needed to overcome great obstacles. In the past, I have had challenges. They have helped make me who I am today. I know I will have other challenges ahead. My past has prepared me well for my future...
Knowing what things are worth fighting for allows us to stay focussed on the bigger picture...
None of us have unlimited energy, it’s in our best interest to pick our battles.
Enduring the storms along the way might slow us down. They may be discouraging and draining, but they don't last forever if we plot a course to a sunnier part of the world and stay on course.
never give up on really important things
always keep hope
always hang on to the vision of important successes
keep your eyes on the prize

1月24日 choose your consequencesThe answers you find will come from the questions you ask. The things you accomplish will result from the efforts you mount. The places you go will depend on the journeys you undertake. The rewards you enjoy flow from the risks you are willing to accept.
When you control the causes, the effects will be to your liking. What you get from any experience or situation depends primarily on what you put into it. Those who are wise, have made the effort to learn. Those who are wealthy, have made the effort to earn.
Output depends on input. Input depends on you. What you are giving will determine how you are living. You can get whatever you desire by taking the steps that will cause it to happen. Everything you do has a consequence. Use that reality to your advantage.
Choose your ideal consequences by carefully choosing your actions.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. 1月22日 the power of acceptance
Sometimes the best way to free yourself from a burden is to accept it. Much of the destructive essence of any burdensome situation comes from fighting against it. Once you stop fighting, you can start progressing.
Certainly if there is a threat you protect yourself against it. But there is no point in fighting against what already is. When you accept the situation, that is the starting point at which you begin to make the most of it. When you can go beyond acceptance into sincere gratitude, you take on a powerful positive momentum.
In short, accept what is, then find something positive about it. Even the most desperate situation has its positive aspects and possibilities. You'll uncover them only after you've accepted that the situation exists.
Acceptance is not surrender. It is the recognition of reality. By clearly seeing what is, by acknowledging and even being grateful, you can move things forward toward the way you would like them to be.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. 1月17日 make it yoursDon't wait for someone to give you permission to succeed and achieve. Get yourself busy and do it. Don't wait for someone to tell you how to do it. Take it upon yourself to figure it out. Don't wait for just the right situation. Don't count on being lucky. Do what it takes to make your own good fortune. Learn from others. Seek the advice, input and feedback of those whose opinions you respect. But don't depend on anyone or anything to do it for you. Make the best of fortunate situations, but don't depend on luck or chance.
Depend on those things over which you have the most direct control -- your own thoughts and actions, your ability to make the choices which will lead to precisely where you have decided to go.
Your destiny is in your hands. Think like it and act like it with each passing moment. Take hold of that destiny and make it the best it can possibly be.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. 1月11日 who you are
Every day a thousand decisions greet you. They overflow with opportunity. They can take you to any place imaginable. How do you choose? How do you decide? You do so based on who you think you are.
What do others think of you? It depends on who you think you are. What will you become? That depends entirely on who you think you will become.
Who do you think you are? It is revealed in every moment, in every action, in every decision, in every thought and opinion. The great thing is that you can be whomever you decide you will be. It is your choice. It is your life. So who do you think you are?
1月6日 a positive startEnergize your life by starting each day with gratitude. When you wake up, before you do anything else, stop and count your blessings. Then find something special about each day for which you can be thankful. It's a great way to get each day started on a positive note, and it can make a major difference throughout the day. Actively practicing gratitude on a regular basis will keep you in touch with the very best of your possibilities. It will enable you to see opportunities and utilize resources which may otherwise have remained hidden or forgotten.
Maintaining an attitude of gratitude will keep you connected to the things of value in your life. So in a very real sense it will add value to each moment of the day.
There are many good things in your life. It makes sense to fully appreciate and enjoy them. When you do, those positive things will grow even stronger. Begin each day by counting your many blessings. By so doing you'll attract many more.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. 12月31日 stronger tomorrowYou can hide things about yourself from just about anyone, but you can't really hide them from yourself. You know what you're up to, and that's important. Because the person you are to become tomorrow is always watching the person you are today. How can you live this day so that your future self will find strength and inspiration? What can you do that will make the person you'll be tomorrow proud to have been the person you are today?
You know who you are right now, you know what you're doing, what your motivations are, what kind of attitude you maintain. You know and control the real you. Let the person you are today push you forward, positively into the future. Soon you'll look back on today, and what you see can either give you strength or bring you regret. Choose your actions so that what you do today will truly make you stronger tomorrow.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. Happy New Year!
Best wishes for a healthy, happy, prosperous 2006
~ cheers !

12月9日 a better youDon't concern yourself with being better than everyone else. That will mainly get you resentment, disappointment, or both. Focus instead on being better today than you were yesterday, on being even better tomorrow than you are today.
When you compare yourself to others, you'll either end up being disappointed or you'll end up being arrogant. Instead, compare yourself to yourself. The important thing is to make progress in your own life. Upstaging someone else simply won't bring you any true gain. Improving yourself will.
We all share certain things in common, and yet no two people are the same. There is no one who is better than you. And at the same time, you are better than no one else. You are unique. You are beyond compare. Make the most of it. Make it better and better each day. Stop worrying about everyone else and you'll free up enormous energy to be the best you can be.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr.
12月5日 reaching itTo achieve anything, you must truly want it. And that means more than simply desiring the end result. It means you must also want to go through the process of creating that achievement.
To have anything of value, be willing to build that value within yourself. Short circuiting the process, skipping across the effort and going directly to the end result, will not work, because what you obtain that way is not truly yours. You'll always be looking over your shoulder, worried that you'll lose it just as easily as you got it.
To travel from one place to another, you must find a way to traverse the distance in between. Every effort which stands between you and your goal serves to increase the value of reaching that goal.
The value of reaching your goal depends on what you put into reaching it. Make the achievement yours, give it true value, by making it the result of your efforts.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr.
11月30日 make a differenceThe happiest moments are those spent spreading happiness to others. Real and lasting wealth comes from providing value to others, from making yourself indispensable to the world.
Your greatest opportunity is to make a difference in your own special way. Your most promising possibility is to give something of yourself to those around you.
As you go through this day, look for ways to create real and lasting value for the world in which you live. Make this day better because you were here.
No matter what your business or profession may be, the greatest opportunities and the highest rewards go to those who take it upon themselves to create value. And the amazing thing is, there's almost no competition. When the vast majority is focused on taking and getting, those who sincerely desire to create and produce shine even more brilliantly by comparison.
Do yourself a big favor. Make a difference in your world.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr. 11月27日 make it betterIf you're not satisfied with what is, then you need to get busy and visualize what can be. Replacing or improving the undesirable is much more effective than just rejecting it. Being for something works infinitely better than just complaining.
Rather than waste your time and effort on useless complaints, invest yourself in improving the situation. Moving forward will get you much farther than moving against.
There are those who complain, who take pride in being a victim. And then there are those who see the enormous opportunity that comes from making a situation better. Which approach makes the most sense to you?
If there's something you don't like, make it better. It's not that big of a step from seeing something as undesirable and visualizing how it can be better. Put some effort behind your vision. Don't just stand there complaining. Make it better!
Ralph S. Marston 10月20日 collaboration
Peer tutoring is a term that refers to someone assisting someone else they work with. It may be a colleague or a classmate, or a friend.
At the high school I work at as a paraprofessional, I often see students helping each other in various situations.
Some students just look for answers. There will always be those looking for quick and dirty solutions, people who look for the easiest way to get things done (unfortunately, this can often be very short-sighted).
“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”—Author unknown
Empowering someone with the tools to succeed is a lot different than just letting them copy the answers from someone who's done the work.
Peer tutors can often be more effective partially because of age. Often, someone closer to your own age can communicate easier with you in ways.
Some are not comfortable in seeking help. Perhaps they do not want to appear weak. Maybe pride gets in the way. Certain people can be too shy. Overcoming these initial obstacles can often be a bigger challenge than the task it self.
Collaboration shows us the power of teamwork.

10月14日 54 times
For the past 3 days there has been a substitute teacher in one of the math classes I am in. That must be one of the hardest jobs around.
They often do not have the respect of the students, much of the time the material they are trying to do with the students they may not be familiar with.
Tough gig.
This particular sub was a shusher. With one class, I counted... She went shh 54 times (in a 65 minute long class). Do you think that near the end of class her shushes were effective? Ack.
After 3 days of this (twice a day), I'm looking forward to the return of the regular teacher.
Taking initiative
With the sub watching the class, it's interesting to watch how the students problem solve without the regular math teacher in the room to help.
Just because there's a sub, doesn't mean there isn't work to do.
Some cheat, and copy a classmates finished work. Some give up and shut down. Some plow through with a little encouragement, and some get together with others to try and find solutions.
Young adults have a lot on their plates. They are at an age where expectations of them are greater. They are trying to adjust to how they might relate to the world as an adult, and they are finding out how well they cope with many new challenges.
In some ways they have advantages over us older folk too. They can be more open minded, and better equipped to deal with many of the things thrown their way.
Often I can see myself in some of these students. I remember the awkwardness and insecurities.
Growing pains often stay with us through our lives. They colour our personalities. We remember the people who helped us and the ones who hurt us.
We learn lessons along the way (some of them, hard ones).
Sometimes we may see a person as 'disruptive' and 'trouble'.
What we don't see is their home life. We don't see how much sleep thy are getting, what they are eating (or smoking). We don't have the full picture, and only see the tip of the iceberg.
I sometimes wish I could get a glimpse of why they are the way they are.
We are all products of a variety of influences. Parents, friends, the media, our own body chemistry- all contribute to who we become.
Along the way when we get the right kind of encouragement at the right time, we have the opportunity for growth.
By the time they arrive at high school, most young adults know that they are responsible for their own success. For most of them, lessons learned along the way have hopefully helped to equip them with the tools they need to persevere.
Successes and failures help to shape our self-esteem. Our confidence grows or falters, depending on our experiences and how we have reacted to them.
Most of us have differing advantages and disadvantages. Each of us are skilled at some things, and not so skilled at others.
Potential is often all around us. The resources available to us are usually only limited by our own perceptions.
Sometimes life can seem unfair, and often we can grow through pain and struggles.
People who take initiative, who attempt to utilize possible alternate avenues of success will have a greater opportunity to accomplish more.
Certain situations lend themselves to mentoring. Being able to acquire assistance from people around us can be an effective choice.
For many of us, fear is our biggest enemy.
We all have obstacles, distractions and temptations Some, more than others, and for them
In the end, the bottom line is - we usually get what we deserve.
9月28日 Excellence
Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude. Excellence comes not from education, money, ability or connections alone. It comes from a commitment to do the very best with whatever you have available.
Excellence is very valuable, and it is open to anyone who commits to follow it. Excellence is always in demand, in any field of endeavor, in any economic climate, in any set of circumstances.
Excellence comes from thoroughness, from attending to the necessary details while staying clearly focused on the purpose. Excellence comes from a sincere desire to make a positive difference.
No matter what the task, if it is followed through with excellence people will take notice. The effort you put into creating excellence will be effort wisely invested. Everyone has the opportunity to produce excellence in their own way, and it is an opportunity that anyone would do well to capitalize on.
Ralph S. Marston, Jr.
9月21日 reminders to yourself
Empower yourself.
Need to improve how well you are received?
Through out the day remind yourself to be friendly and cheerful. Concentrate on being helpful and supportive. Focus on being positive and open.
Being approachable and non-threatening can help you accomplish good things.
Tweak your attitude during your day. You can avoid unnecessary stress and enjoy happier days when you say it with a smile.
Want to improve some other part of yourself? Focus on it.
It can be easy to get caught up in the rush rush events of the day and forget about goals that can help you do what you do better.
Remind yourself every once in a while about how you can be more effective.
You’ll be making your own life easier…

9月15日 the joy of discovery
I couldn’t resist.
After work today, I came home, changed and went for a bike ride. The weather is nice, and I wasn’t as tired (or hungry) as I have normally been when I arrived home. The autumn leaves were calling my name…
I loved feeling the crunch of the crisp brown leaves as I cruised through the streets. Today’s journey was 20 km. (I have put over 300 km on my new bike since getting it a few weeks ago.)
I headed downtown. There is a park that I haven’t visited this year yet, so I took a cruise through it. The park lies where The Red River meets The Seine River here in Winnipeg. This little chunk of trails, paths and fields is tucked away in St. Boniface and is called Lagimodiere Gaboury Park. It’s a nice walk, jog or bike ride.
I zipped through St. Boniface and was about to head toward The Forks, when I noticed that I could also go straight, underneath a bridge. I had never explored this route before.
“Where does this go?” I asked myself, and decided to check it out.
Well.
I discovered a whole new part of the city I had never ridden through. It was a trip down Lyndale Drive that followed the Red River South.
What a lovely ride…
I am so glad I decided to choose a different way to go for a change.
I could have gone down the route I know, the route I am familiar with.
When you decide to explore new paths,

9月7日 back to skoolToday was the first day of school with students.
(for those of you who don't know- I am a teaching assistant at a high school) Classes I am in currently include:
Math 10F & 20S, Intro. To Computers, Science 20F, and English 11G. My resource teacher mentioned that I'd also be working with a PreCal student starting tomorrow. It's nice to see the students so well behaved. Of course in the halls they're noisy and excited. In class they start off paying attention. It's too bad it doesn't last...
It is sometimes referred to as 'the honeymoon period'. After a couple of weeks, the kids are pushing boundries and no longer on their best behavior. Enjoy it while you can! It's interesting to watch the different methods that teachers use to get students back into 'work mode', and what methods they employ to get to know the students. You can imagine that after being out of school for 2 months, some may have a hard time focussing on school, assignments and so on. Some teachers are very good at getting feedback from students; they know it's important to connect. A good teacher is a joy to watch in action. They are inspiring, and it's nice to come across caring, talented educators.
On the wall of the last class, today I spotted the following quotation-
'success lies not in being the best but in doing your best' : )
8月29日 the world is what you make it
clean or dirty abusive or supportive painful or joyful
When we tolerate injustices, we cheat the world. When we lie and deceive, we erode our own character.
Each day is filled with opportunities. Every moment is chance to accomplish a small miracle. Life is a series of choices.
Small victories can lead to a healthier existence. Never underestimate the value of your own contributions.
The day is filled with a world of possibilities and hope. Make it a day of good things.
: )
